As parents, it’s often too easy to put our own needs and desires on the back burners. On the International Day of Happiness, make a point to do something that will make you happy.
To get started, do something that is just for you. Not what your kids want, and not want your partner wants, but what brings you joy. Put aside the guilt, because you deserve this. Plus, it’s a great way to model for your children the importance of taking care of yourself, including your mental health. As long as you aren’t doing something that will not endanger your child, you have every right to do something that will bring you some joy today!
Here a few ideas for how you can celebrate the International Day of Happiness.
Read a Book
When was the last time you really immersed yourself in a book? (Besides the ones your children beg you to read each night.) Grab the book that’s been sitting on your nightstand for weeks collecting dust and put everything else aside. Pour yourself a glass of wine or a hot mug of your favorite tea, kick your feet up, and dive right into another world.
Treat Yourself to a Coffee Upgrade

Kick off the day with a little something special just for you. Instead of the usual morning cup brewed at home, make a trip to your favorite local coffee joint and indulge in a decadent morning beverage. Take a moment to look at your barista in the eyes as you place your order, and give her a smile. Not only will you get your morning caffeine fix, you’re sure to spread the positive vibes.
Make a Date with a Friend
With kids around, it can be hard sometimes to have an uninterrupted conversation. Make a plan to catch up with your bestie, whether it’s in person or on the phone, for some one-on-one time where you can completely focus on your friendship. Remember all the great times you have had together and schedule your next date together.
Get Your Body Moving

Have you missed getting your yoga fix or pedaling away at a spin class? Get those endorphins flowing and immerse yourself in your favorite way to work up a sweat, get your body moving, and put a little extra pep in your step for the rest of the day. To make it even more fun, sign up for a class or go for a run with a friend.
Choose a Happiness Impact Area
Are you looking to go a bit deeper with your own happiness? According to the International Day of Happiness website, there are ten areas that research shows can have a big impact on our own happiness. Those areas are giving, relating, exercising, awareness, trying out, direction, resilience, emotions, acceptance, and meaning. Pick something from one of these categories that will bring you joy.
